It was a bright, sunny day on Friday, May 16 — just perfect for raking, spreading mulch, weeding, trimming, planting, and cleaning to prepare a cemetery for Memorial Day. About 20 HealthTrust employees, who work in Concord but live across the Granite State, donated their time and landscaping skills to the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery (NHSVC) in Boscawen on the Day of Caring 2025.
“Day of Caring is important as it helps give back to the community. This event brings together volunteers to support local nonprofits through hands-on service projects,” said Jason Duffy, Document & Compliance Specialist at HealthTrust. “HealthTrust volunteers were at the NH State Veterans Cemetery to assist in beautifying the grounds and lending help where needed.”
Day of Caring is a community-wide effort that brings together volunteers and local businesses to provide short-term, project-focused volunteer service to local nonprofit and public organizations. This is the second year HealthTrust helped NHSVC prepare for the Memorial Day Ceremony and the entire summer. Employees had the opportunity to sign up for grounds keeping work for three different shifts: morning (three hours), afternoon (three hours), or all day (six hours).
“I wanted to give back to the community and as a thank you for those who’ve given their lives or a time in their lives to fight for our everyday freedoms,” said Jaci Kater, Contact Center Representative at HealthTrust. “I have family that has served in different branches of the military and I felt like it was a way I could give back and say thank you.”
Part of the HealthTrust team tackled a berm, located to the left of the chapel and running parallel to Daniel Webster Highway. It is an area where visitors frequently bring and plant donations, such as tulips, hosta, phlox, and other perennials. Other team members cleaned gravestones with water and gentle scrubbing to remove dirt, leaves, and other loose materials.
“We had nearly 100 volunteers working tirelessly to prepare the cemetery for Memorial Day! Volunteers spread mulch, pulled weeds, cleaned headstones, picked up sticks and debris, and worked hard!” NHSVC posted on Facebook. “We made an incredible amount of progress and we are incredibly grateful to all of our volunteers who honor our veterans and their families with their time, talent, and treasure.”
