One bad fall can cause a lifetime of pain. One out of every five falls causes a serious injury, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Falls affect people of all ages and are the most common cause of traumatic brain injury. Here are some ways to stay upright and safe even when the weather is cold and icy.
Put it on ice. As the weather turns colder, monitor areas where you walk frequently and make sure all surfaces are dry, sanded and de-iced.
Choose function over fashion. Wear boots, hiking shoes or other pavement-gripping footwear when traversing outdoor walking paths and parking lots and, if you want, switch into more fashionable shoes once you are inside.
Be the tortoise, not the hare. Walk slowly and carefully in and out of buildings and don’t block your view by carrying too much.
Read sign language. Look for and heed signs alerting you to hazards such as falling ice or slippery walkways.
Light the way. Make sure all walking paths on the outside and inside of your home and workplace are well lit.
Exercise! Muscle strengthening and balance exercises are particularly helpful for preventing falls. Remember, if you complete your 2017 Health Assessment, you can receive up to $100 reimbursement for exercise or balance classes (including Tai Chi) from the Slice of LifeHealth Awareness Program.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about medications and other factors that might increase your risk for falling and ways to minimize those risks.
Have an eye exam, if you’re due for one. Vision problems are a leading cause of falls. All HealthTrust medical plans include coverage for preventive vision exams as recommended by your primary care provider.
